What Is Ibusuki Like Through the Year? Rapeseed Flowers, Sunflowers and Lake Ikeda

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to know what Ibusuki looks like in different seasons and what there is to do besides the sand bath. It uses the English guidebook published by the Ibusuki tourism office in February 2026 and the English pages of the National Parks of Japan site, which is produced by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). All pages were read on 2026-10-04.

The guidebook does not give bloom dates or monthly weather, so treat the seasons below as hints rather than a calendar.

The climate

The guidebook says Ibusuki has an annual average temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, in part because of warm ocean currents. During the honeymoon boom of the 1960s it was dubbed the "Hawaii of the Orient". The guide describes a tropical and nostalgic atmosphere and a warm climate that suits crops such as okra and broad beans.

Early spring

The guidebook says that in early spring JR Nishi-Oyama Station offers combined views of Mt. Kaimon and a yellow carpet of rapeseed flowers. Mt. Kaimon is also known as "Satsuma Fuji". The guide adds that Nishi-Oyama is Japan's southernmost JR station, at 31 degrees 11 minutes north latitude.

Cherry blossoms and azaleas

The guidebook says Mt. Uomi, which is 215 metres high, has about 600 cherry blossom trees blooming in the spring and azaleas that bloom in early summer. You can drive to the top. On clear days Sakurajima and Cape Sata can be seen in the distance. A park at the foot of Mt. Kaimon has 500 cherry trees, according to the same guide.

Summer

The guidebook mentions a stunning view of Mt. Kaimon and sunflowers in the summer. The park at the foot of Mt. Kaimon has a pool with a big waterslide in the summer. Lake Ikeda, which the guide calls the largest lake in Kyushu with calm waters, offers water activities such as sea kayaking and banana boats.

Cool water in any season

The Tosenkyo spring was selected as one of the 100 Best Water Sources of the Heisei Era by the Environment Ministry. The guidebook says it gives 100,000 tons of 13-degree spring water a day, year-round, so flowing somen noodles can be enjoyed in every season, not only in summer.

The sandy road to Chiringashima

The guidebook says the sandy Chiririn Road to the island of Chiringashima appears only at low tide during spring and at mid tide from March to October. The island is described as auspicious for matchmaking. A note says touring the island was not possible as of January 2026 because of landslides, so check the latest information.

Winter lights and the sea

The guidebook says a large flower park near Nagasakibana holds seasonal events such as the Christmas lights in December. The National Parks of Japan site adds that dolphins appear in the bay and that its southern beaches are warmed by the same volcanic heat that warms the sand baths.

Autumn leaves in a temple garden

The guidebook describes a temple at an elevation of 300 metres with an original complex of temple buildings that it calls rare in Kyushu. Its Japanese garden is decorated with boulders, moss and stone lanterns. Visitors can enjoy the seasonal beauty of flowers such as azaleas and weeping cherry trees, and of autumn leaves.

A flower park all year

Flower Park Kagoshima, near Nagasakibana, covers a vast 36.5 hectares. The guidebook says it is filled with a variety of subtropical and temperate plants from around the world and is surrounded by natural pine forests. It holds seasonal events, so check what is on during your dates.

On the lake and the sea

The guidebook lists cruises and fishing experiences in which visitors can take home their catch and learn how to fillet a fish. Cruises last 60 to 90 minutes and other activities three hours or more, and booking one day in advance is advised. Lake Ikeda offers a calmer option on the water.
